We are excited to announce our new partnership with the HUDA Clinic, located in Northwest Detroit; the HUDA Clinic provides free Primary Care, Dental, Mental Health Services, Podiatry, and Ophthalmology for those who are uninsured and underinsured.
On Saturday, June 3, fourth-year dental students will begin providing treatment under the supervision of adjunct faculty. First-, second- and third-year dental students may volunteer to assist and observe. Students will expect to see many refugee and immigrant patients. This partnership will continue monthly for one Saturday each month.
By providing care to the underserved populations at the HUDA Clinic, students will broaden their clinical learning experience and expand upon their knowledge of issues in public health dentistry. Simultaneously, students will help to increase the number of patients seen at the clinic, addressing an access to care issue.
Special thanks to the AAPHD Detroit Mercy chapter for initiating this partnership, particularly Sabrina Wadood, DS4, AAPHD president, who assisted in coordinating logistics throughout the process. We would also like to thank Dr. Shakeel Niazi, who has volunteered to be adjunct faculty to make this partnership possible.
