Timothy R. Saunders, D.D.S.

Timothy R. Saunders, D.D.S., assistant dean of Clinic Administration and a professor of Clinical Dentistry

Saunders earned his D.D.S. degree from Creighton University School of Dentistry, Omaha, Nebraska. Upon completing a one-year General Rotating Internship at USAF Medical Center Scott, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, Saunders attended the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, where he completed his three-year residency training in Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthetics. He then spent the following twenty-four years practicing and teaching prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthetics while actively serving in the United States Air Force.

Simultaneously, he was honored with the appointment as the Special Consultant in Prosthodontics to the Air Force Surgeon General and served in this capacity for over fifteen years prior to his military retirement as a Full Colonel. Subsequently, Saunders joined the faculty of the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, where he continued to practice as a prosthodontist and serve as a professor of Clinical Dentistry until what would prove to be a short-lived retirement. During his tenure at USC, Saunders was repeatedly recognized for his teaching expertise by his students and his peers, who bestowed multiple teaching awards upon him. In 2011, Saunders joined the faculty of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.

Saunders is a life fellow and diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics; a life fellow of Omicron Kappa Upsilon; a life fellow and past president of the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics; a life fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the International College of Dentists, and the American College of Dentists. Additionally, Saunders holds membership in various local, state, and national dental organizations.

An avid sports enthusiast throughout his life, Saunders has participated in a wide variety of activities in the air, on land, and in the ocean. Early in his career, he earned his private pilot’s license. His passion for skiing, both downhill and cross-country is surpassed only by that same level of excitement that he shares for surfing, prone paddle boarding, and scuba diving. A solid tennis player, Saunders has likewise run and won a recognizable number of marathon races. While his custom-built titanium road bike merits high marks with him, there’s no doubt that his two Ducati motorcycles are among his favorites, especially since he’s toured the nation from coast to coast, inclusive of a representative number of National Parks, on them.
