Each year, Detroit Mercy Dental honors graduating students with a variety of awards. Recipients are chosen based on a demonstration of excellence in different aspects of dentistry and dental education.
The Class of 2019 awardees were honored on Thurs., May 9 at the Detroit Yacht Club. This year, 38 students were presented with 43 Division Awards and 5 Dean’s Achievement Awards.
Award recipients are selected by deans, directors, and chiefs of service in the following areas: Academic Administration, Clinical Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Leadership & Service, Pediatric Dentistry, and Research & Biomedical Sciences.

Class of 2019 Dean’s Achievement Awards
Hadi Khazaal D.D.S
Dental – School of Dentistry Outstanding Academic Achievement Award
Presented to the dental graduate who has attained the highest scholastic standing throughout his or her years of dental study.
Khazaal was recently inducted into the Omikron Kappa Upsilon and also received the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Dental Student award.
Paige Perrin R.D.H., B.S.
Dental Hygiene – School of Dentistry Outstanding Academic Achievement Award
Presented to the dental hygiene graduate who has attained the highest scholastic standing throughout his or her years of dental hygiene study.
Perrin also received the School of Dentistry Dental Hygiene Periodontology Achievement Award.
Michelle Tra D.D.S.
International College of Dentists Student Leadership Award
Presented to the dental graduate who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and has great potential for continued future leadership.
Tra will receive $500 for the International College of Dentists Student Leadership Award. She has served as president of the Class of 2019 and was recently inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
Nicole Christy D.D.S.
Delta Dental Foundation Student Leadership Award
Presented to the dental graduate who has demonstrated leadership skills, and a commitment to public service and outstanding service in dentistry.
Delta Dental Foundation Community Commitment Award
Presented to the dental graduate who has demonstrated commitment to community service and underserved populations.
Christy will receive $2,500 for the Delta Dental Foundation Student Leadership Award as well as $25,000 for the Delta Dental Foundation Community Commitment Award. She was selected for these awards because of her leadership in the school and commitment to serve in a designated health professional shortage area following graduation.
Christy will return to her hometown of Iron Mountain, Mich. to work as an associate dentist in the John Fornetti Dental Center. She has also served as the Class of 2019 Secretary and an Admissions Ambassador to the School of Dentistry.
